A new policy and applied research centre, the Wales Centre for Equity in Education (WCEE), was launched in Wales in December 2013. A joint initiative between the University of Wales and the University of Wales Trinity Saint David, the Wales Centre for Equity in Education aims to better understand the causes and effects of educational inequalities in Wales and to use evidence from research to develop interventions and inform public policy.
The Centre will be fully integrated within the two university institutions, supporting the development of excellent research and teaching and building their national profile, especially in the areas of teacher education, early years and social inclusion. It will also be closely aligned to the national policy context including the overarching national priority to tackle poverty and break the link between disadvantage and low educational achievement.
Centre Manager Lizzie Swaffield said of the WCEE’s aims:
“We want to work on all forms of inequity including gender, ethnicity and poverty and are looking at all parts of the education system from early years to adult education. A key focus of our current work is on breaking the link between poverty and low attainment in schools (this is also a major governmental priority in Wales at the moment) but we are keen to work in other areas too.”
