The Australian Centre for Student Equity and Success acknowledges Indigenous peoples across Australia as the Traditional Owners of the lands on which the nation’s campuses are situated. With a history spanning more than 60,000 years as the original educators, Indigenous peoples hold a unique place in our nation. We recognise the importance of their knowledge and culture, and reflect the principles of participation, equity, and cultural respect in our work. We pay our respects to Elders past, present, and future, and consider it an honour to learn from our Indigenous colleagues, partners, and friends.

The Australian Centre for Student Equity and Success is pleased to welcome today’s launch of the Australian Tertiary Education Commission (ATEC) — a crucial step toward building a fairer, more accessible tertiary education system in Australia.

ATEC will serve as an independent steward, guiding reforms to grow higher education participation, improve equity outcomes, and strengthen pathways between vocational education and university sectors. This aligns with the national goal of 80% tertiary attainment for working-age Australians by 2050 — a bold vision to ensure everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

We congratulate the appointment of Professor Mary O’Kane AC as interim Chief Commissioner, along with Professors Barney Glover AO and Larissa Behrendt AO, whose expertise and commitment to equity will be invaluable as the Commission takes shape.

We look forward to collaborating with ATEC to ensure equity remains front and centre in Australia’s tertiary education future — making higher education more inclusive, diverse, and responsive to the needs of all students.
