The Australian Centre for Student Equity and Success acknowledges Indigenous peoples across Australia as the Traditional Owners of the lands on which the nation’s campuses are situated. With a history spanning more than 60,000 years as the original educators, Indigenous peoples hold a unique place in our nation. We recognise the importance of their knowledge and culture, and reflect the principles of participation, equity, and cultural respect in our work. We pay our respects to Elders past, present, and future, and consider it an honour to learn from our Indigenous colleagues, partners, and friends.

What was trialed

The project will evaluate an intervention package called Tuned In Connect, which comprises a self-paced online module and a 5-session group course, focused on helping students recognise and manage academic-related emotions. The trial will compare outcomes from the Tuned In Connect condition with Control condition at two time points: baseline and post-intervention (6-weeks later). Control data will come from both historical sources (i.e., university students who participated in the 2023 Sharper Minds trial as controls and identified as neurodivergent) and waitlisted participants from the Universities of Queensland, Melbourne and Newcastle. The study will assess whether this social-emotional intervention improves academic participation, wellbeing, and success for neurodivergent university students.

How the trial was delivered

The study will enroll 120 neurodivergent students from the Universities of Queensland, Melbourne, and Newcastle, to evaluate the Tuned in Connect program through a quasi-randomised design. This intervention includes a self-paced online module and a five-session group program focused on helping students recognise and manage academic-related emotions. It uses a two-dimensional model of emotion and music listening to support emotion regulation. Tuned In Connect is an adaptation of the earlier Tuned In program, developed in collaboration with neurodivergent students to better address their unique needs. The trial will compare outcomes from the Tuned In Connect group with control groups at two times: baseline and post-intervention (6-weeks later). Control data will come from both historical sources (the 2023 Sharper Minds trial) and waitlisted participants from the Universities of Queensland, Melbourne and Newcastle. The study will assess whether this social-emotional intervention improves academic participation, wellbeing, and success for neurodivergent university students.
