The Australian Centre for Student Equity and Success acknowledges Indigenous peoples across Australia as the Traditional Owners of the lands on which the nation’s campuses are situated. With a history spanning more than 60,000 years as the original educators, Indigenous peoples hold a unique place in our nation. We recognise the importance of their knowledge and culture, and reflect the principles of participation, equity, and cultural respect in our work. We pay our respects to Elders past, present, and future, and consider it an honour to learn from our Indigenous colleagues, partners, and friends.

What was trialed

The Individualised Digital Pedagogy (IDP) provides targeted literacy and numeracy remediation and support to pre-service teachers, improving academic performance and preparing them for the Literacy and Numeracy test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE).

The IDP features:

  • learning activities and adaptive digital tools tailored to the individuals’ needs based on the initial diagnostic tests;
  • interactive forums and digital materials;
  • adaptive digital questioning tools for real-time adjustments in question difficulty based on student performance; and
  • online tools to facilitate social interaction and peer support.

With its innovative approach, the IDP aims to address the unique challenges faced by students from low socio-economic status background and regional/remote areas. It leverages technology and personalised learning to support students’ success in teacher education programs.

The IDP aims to improve students’ literacy and numeracy skills, help them pass the LANTITE, and demonstrate the literacy and numeracy competence required to become a teacher in Australia.

What was found

The results will be available in December 2025.

How the trial was delivered

A pragmatic Randomised Controlled Trial (RCT) is being used to assess the impact of the IDP on pre-service teachers’ literacy and numeracy skills.

The trial will be inclusive and diverse, with participants including equity students, notably from low socio-economic status backgrounds or regional/remote areas, embarking on their first year of academic study in the Central Queensland University Initial Teacher Education (ITE) course. Pre-service teachers will be categorised into subgroups (strata) based on age, gender, and equity groups. Similar numbers of individuals from within each group will be randomly allocated into two groups: (1) those invited to participate in the IDP and (2) those provided the opportunity to use the existing university support system to prepare for the LANTITE.

A standardised literacy and numeracy assessment will be used to estimate literacy and numeracy skills and academic performance. The impact of the IDP will be assessed by comparing the two groups’ performance on these standardised assessments.

The trial is being undertaken at Central Queensland University, in North Rockhampton, Queensland, during 2025.
