The Australian Centre for Student Equity and Success acknowledges Indigenous peoples across Australia as the Traditional Owners of the lands on which the nation’s campuses are situated. With a history spanning more than 60,000 years as the original educators, Indigenous peoples hold a unique place in our nation. We recognise the importance of their knowledge and culture, and reflect the principles of participation, equity, and cultural respect in our work. We pay our respects to Elders past, present, and future, and consider it an honour to learn from our Indigenous colleagues, partners, and friends.

Overview

Australian Centre for Student Equity and Sucess (ACSES) are delivering a 3-hour workshop on Wednesday 9 October 2024. In this workshop, Dr Patricia Vermillion Peirce will facilitate a discussion with equity practitioners, learning about the equity practices that are currently underway across Queensland universities, and identifying those programs that may be of greatest value to trial for the benefit of our equity cohorts.

To explore the potential opportunity to undertake an ethical trial, ACSES will also workshop some challenging concepts relevant to trials.

Event information

This will include:

  • Making clear what questions trials can (and cannot) answer, so practitioners can determine the relevance and need for a trial;
  • Discussing randomisation and some common beliefs about withholding support, enabling practitioners to consider if/how randomisation can be done ethically; discussing the participant numbers needed for different types of trials, so practitioners can determine if a trial is feasible; and
  • Providing examples of trials of equity programs, demonstrating how trials can be conducted ethically in the Australian equity sector.

If there is an intervention identified for a potential trial by the end of the workshop, Patricia can help you draft an Expression of Interest on behalf of those interested in undertaking a trial.

You can come by yourself or invite others delivering and/or interested in evaluating equity programs at your institution. If you are interested, please RSVP by 7 October 2024.
