A Roundtable and book launch for People with Intellectual Disability Experiencing University Life: Theoretical Underpinnings, Evidence and Lived Experience, will be held Wednesday, 27 March 2019 at the Medical Foundation
Camperdown, Sydney.
About the Book: People with Intellectual Disability Experiencing University Life: Theoretical Underpinnings, Evidence and Lived Experience, Edited by Patricia O’Brien, Michelle L. Bonati, Friederike Gadow & Roger Slee
This book is the first international reader on inclusive tertiary education and covers global perspectives associated with people with intellectual disability attending inclusive university settings. Part 1 examines the philosophical, theoretical and rights-based framework of inclusion. Part 2 provides evidence and insight into programs across the globe. Part 3 consists of chapters associated with lived experience, represented through the voices of former students of inclusive education initiatives, parents of adult children with intellectual disability who have participated in tertiary education, and lecturers who have taught students with intellectual disability. Part 4 examines critical issues, including post-university outcomes, transition from university to employment, inclusive university teaching approaches, and implementing tertiary education initiatives. The book proposes calls to action with specific tasks to move the rhetoric of human rights into reality for adults with intellectual disability through inclusive tertiary education.
Roundtable – 2 pm
Whilst inclusive tertiary education is gaining prominence in Australia, only two Australian universities currently offer inclusive opportunities for people with intellectual disability. Speakers, including leaders in the field, students and
families, will share critical insights and engage in discussion on key issues. The aim of this event is the development of a position paper to positively influence advancing inclusive tertiary education in Australia.
Book Launch – 4 pm
The book will be launched by Professor Keith McVilly, Foundation Professorial Fellow for Disability and Inclusion, School of Social and Political Sciences at the University of Melbourne.
