Workshop: Practical tools for working and supporting students with Dyslexia and Specific Learning Disabilities

The Dear Dyslexic Foundation and Australian Tertiary Education Network on Disability (ATEND) NSW/ACT are hosting an interactive workshop for teachers, support staff, parents and students.

This workshop will provide participants with the tools and skills they need to help make the learning pathway easier for students, with dyslexia and specific learning disabilities in upper secondary school or entering TAFE or University. It will increase participants understanding of how students, with learning disabilities think and learn differently from neurotypical learners. This workshop will challenge participant’s mindsets as to how those with dyslexia approach their learning.

The workshop will be facilitated by Dr Jacqueline Caskey and Christine MacJouvelet from the Dear Dyslexic Foundation.

The day will cover a range of topics including:

  • Dyslexia: what is it?
  • Identifying the signs of dyslexia in students
  • Strategies for students:
    • Helping students to organise themselves and manage their study
    • Learning types – Helping students identify their learning preferences
    • Assistive technology in the classroom
    • Students’ social and emotional wellbeing
