Gender diversity and mental illness: students from an LGBTIQ background. What support is available?
The Australian Disability Clearinghouse on Education and Training (ADCET) and the Australian Tertiary Education Network on Disability (ATEND) look forward to bringing you this webinar.
Why are students from the LGBTIQ community disproportionately represented in mental health statistics? What should we be doing as a community to support them?
For this webinar we will be joined by four panellists, each representing a different view point from the tertiary setting. The panel, an academic, DA background, tutor and a student, are from diverse sections of the LGBTIQ community and will discuss their experiences and what they would find more inclusive and helpful when studying and working in a tertiary environment.
For this webinar a number of scenarios will be presented and discussed.
Scenario 1
Experience of a student at university. Why we need to do something about mental health of LGBTIQ students. Target of discrimination and oppression by those in power. This session is to alert staff to some of the issues LGBTIQ students and staff still face, the impact on their wellbeing and study and what we as a community can do to be more inclusive. The panel of representatives are from diverse sections of the LGBTIQ community and will discuss their experiences and what they would find more inclusive and helpful when studying and working in a tertiary environment.
Scenario 2
A student brings a letter to a Disability Advisor to register with Equity and ask for a Learning Access Plan. Discussion of the letter, what information to look for and what supports could be put in place for the student.
Scenario 3
A classroom situation. Case study – Steven Pinker on Language Pragmatics. How the curriculum can discriminate when all the examples are from a hetero-normative perspective. Assumptions about gender, pronouns and attitudes.
